Why Some Products Contain Water — And Others Don’t

Every ingredient has a purpose.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Why does one product contain water while another doesn’t?”

The answer is simple.

Different formulations are created to achieve different purposes.

At Skin Century, no ingredient is added without a reason—including water.

Understanding the difference between water-based and oil-based formulations helps explain why products feel different, perform differently and are suited to different needs.

Water-based formulations

Water-based formulations contain purified water alongside carefully selected oils, butters and other ingredients.

Because water and oils naturally separate, these formulations also include carefully selected emulsifying ingredients to keep everything beautifully blended.

Water-based products often feel:

• Lightweight.
• Fresh.
• Hydrating.
• Smooth to apply.
• Comfortable on both skin and hair.

They are ideal when hydration is an important part of the formulation.

Examples include:

• Creams
• Lotions
• Hair custards
• Some conditioners
• Certain moisturisers

Oil-based formulations

Oil-based formulations contain oils, butters and waxes without added water.

Because there is no water present, they do not require emulsifying ingredients.

These formulations often feel:

• Rich.
• Protective.
• Nourishing.
• Occlusive.
• Long-lasting on the skin or hair.

Examples include:

• Balms
• Body butters
• Facial oils
• Beard oils
• Oil serums

Neither is better

A common misunderstanding is that one type of formulation is “better” than the other.

In reality, they simply serve different purposes.

Sometimes your skin or hair benefits from additional hydration through a water-based formulation.

At other times, an oil-based product provides the nourishment and protective layer that’s needed.

Many routines benefit from using both, depending on your individual needs.

Rather than following trends, Skin Century begins by asking a simple question:

“What does this product need to do?”

The answer determines the formulation.

If hydration is important, a water-based formulation may be the best choice.
